Congratulations to the University of Indianapolis Class of 2025! We asked 2025 graduates about their UIndy experience. Meet Emma Chavira ’25, who is majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry and a pre-medicine (pre-med) concentration. Chavira transferred to UIndy from Chaminade University of Honolulu.
Why did you pursue biology?
I chose to study biology because I genuinely enjoy what I learn in my classes, specifically how living systems work. I am also fascinated by the science behind human health, and these fields give me the foundation I need to apply my knowledge in medicine.
Why did you choose to study at UIndy?
I chose to study at UIndy because I knew it was a great school that could provide me with lots of opportunities and really push me to learn and be the best I could be.
What UIndy resources have helped you succeed or pursue new opportunities?
Academic Advising at UIndy provided me with more opportunities than I had initially thought. My advisor actually got to know his students and worked to help us connect with others who could help push us and create new opportunities that we didn’t have before.
Are you a part of any extracurriculars on or off campus?
I am the president of the Pre-Health Club, where we plan events for all concentrations in the medical field, such as pre-med, pre-dental, pre-vet, pre-PA, and more! We work on creating connections between students and building a community of those in the same boat as one another. We also plan visits to professional schools, such as IU and Marian Medical Schools, where students can learn more about what their future may look like.
I also volunteered at Riley Hospital for Children during my junior year, where I was able to spend time with the pediatric patients and learn more about the workload and what happens behind the scenes in the hospital.
Which faculty or staff members have had a significant impact on your time at UIndy?
Dr. Greg Weber has really influenced me in my time at UIndy. I’ve only been working with him for the past year or so, but he has really opened my eyes to the science of research and working in the lab. I have really enjoyed the work that we do, and I feel like I have learned so much through it.
What is one of your favorite memories from your time at UIndy?
My favorite memories are Midnight Breakfast and all the fun activities they always have.
What advice would you give to incoming students?
Reach out to other students and faculty/staff and opportunities or help will come your way. It’s really hard to find things on your own, but simply asking can lead you down the path you were trying to find or towards something completely new.
Also, ask questions! The professors at UIndy really want you to understand what you are learning, and they are always willing to break it down until you know it.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to attend medical school and eventually become a pediatrician!
