Faith, Community, and Perseverance: Bryan Chavero’s ’27 (Elementary Education) Path to UIndy

51

For National Transfer Student Week, we asked current transfer students about the transfer process and their UIndy experience.

Bryan Chavero ’27 (Elementary Education) is a first-generation college student and a member of the UIndy Wrestling Team. Chavero transferred from Ancilla College to UIndy.

What inspired you to study elementary education?

I have always worked with kids via camps or after-school programs. I have felt as though this has been a calling for me for many years.

Why did you choose to transfer to UIndy?

UIndy is well-known for its great athletics, facilities, and staff. The School of Education also received high praise.

How would you describe the UIndy transfer process?

Ben Houston could not have made me hungrier to come to UIndy. I had a setback and had to take a gap year, and he ensured that when I came this fall, I would still receive all the awards I had earned from transferring over. I would not be here without his full support.

Were there any challenges you faced while transferring, and how did you overcome them?

There were many challenges I faced not through the school but just life in general. I have never been one to give up or stay down when I fall. I wanted to be a Greyhound, and now, thanks to God, I am living out my dreams.

How has your experience on campus been so far?

It has been so fun to be a part of UIndy Catholic, a multitude of bible studies, many sporting events, and simply just having a tight-knit small community where you kind of get to meet everyone, if you ask me.

Is there a professor, advisor, or staff member who has made an impact on your UIndy experience? How so?

Ben Houston, like I said above, plain and simple. He is the reason I am even typing this.

Also, Professor Tracy Johnson has worked with me all semester to ensure I don’t lose hope and continue to chase my goal of becoming a teacher.

Have you joined any clubs, organizations, or activities? How have they helped you feel connected?

I am a member of UIndy Catholic. I am trying to start a run club, play intramural soccer with my wrestling teammates, and have made an abundance of new friends.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?

Schwitzer Hall right at the pool table. If I have any free time, you will see me shooting a rack alone or forcing people to play me. The table had a bunch of balls missing, and I have found a way to leave a full rack now.

Can you share a memorable moment or experience you’ve had since transferring?

It has all been memorable. I hear a lot of freshmen complaining about the load of homework or simply being stressed. Although I would agree with them, this is one of those times in your life where you have to realize you only get to experience this once, so to me, it is a blessing to say I have homework to do, or I get to stay up with friends to study or work together or just hang out.

What advice would you give to other students who may be considering transferring to UIndy?

I truly mean this when I say: UIndy is the place to be. What you pay and put into this school they will return it to you to the max, from the facilities you get to use, opportunities presented and simply the community here is all for each other wanting to see one another succeed. I would not trade this place for the world.
