Q&A with Que Cooper ’23 (Social Work)

419

The Class of 2023 has officially graduated and is ready to use their UIndy education for service to their communities. Meet first-generation college graduate Que Cooper who recently received her Bachelor of Social Work!

Why did you choose to study social work?

When my son was born, he spent almost the first 6 months of his life in the NICU. During this time, it was a social worker who literally helped us through this tough time. I decided at that point that I wanted to be for others what she was for us.

Why did you choose to study at UIndy?

I chose UIndy (and returned to UIndy) because of the class sizes, flexibility, and family atmosphere. As a non-traditional student, these factors have been instrumental in my success.

Are there any faculty or staff members who have significantly impacted your time at UIndy? If so, who are they and how did they influence you?

Professors Jeffrey Bryant and Christie Jansing have both been God-sent throughout my undergraduate career. They are both completely different but equally amazing. They have been very patient and kind. They are also great examples for social workers.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time at UIndy?

One of my favorite memories is the first drag show I have ever attended. It was so amazing.

What are your plans after graduation?

I start graduate school later this month in the accelerated program. I also plan to continue my career as a case manager at Firefly Children & Family Alliance.

How did the social work program prepare you for your next steps?

I currently work for Firefly Children & Family Alliance, and this degree is perfect as well as needed for the work that I am doing.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

Do what makes you happy, and never measure your success based on someone else’s. What is for you is for you.
