Growth and Hands-On Learning: Ella Pierle’s ’25 (Psychology) UIndy Experience

175

Congratulations to the University of Indianapolis Class of 2025! We asked 2025 graduates about their UIndy experience. Meet Ella Pierle, a first-generation student majoring in psychology with minors in child and youth programs and a concentration in clinical and counseling studies.

Why did you pursue psychology?

I knew I wanted to work with children in some capacity, but I didn’t want to be a teacher. So, I decided on psychology as it opened doors to many different careers and graduate programs where I could work with children!

Why did you choose to study at UIndy?

I chose to attend UIndy because it allowed me to stay close to home while enjoying the many benefits of a smaller campus. Additionally, I have family who work at or are alumni of UIndy.

Have you earned any honors or awards?

I have been on the Dean’s List for seven semesters, am a member of Psi Chi (UIndy Freshmen Honor Society), and am a member of Phi Alpha Epsilon (International Honor Society in Psychology).

What UIndy resources have helped you succeed or pursue new opportunities?

The Stephen F. Fry Professional Edge Center (Pro Edge) provided me with overall guidance in navigating my undergraduate studies, assisting in internship selection, keeping my portfolio up-to-date (including editing resumes and personal statements), and applying to graduate schools.

My service-learning courses also provided me the opportunity to complete volunteer work for course credit, which gave me valuable experiences while building my resume.

During your time at UIndy, did you have the opportunity to complete an internship?

I had the opportunity to intern with Access Abilities, where I provided support to adults with varying cognitive and physical abilities.

Additionally, I worked with the Summer Success Camp at UIndy as a Director’s Assistant and counselor for first-generation high school students. These experiences helped me gain perspective on my working preferences in a professional environment and taught me a great deal about professional communication and collaboration.

Which faculty or staff members have had a significant impact on your time at UIndy?

I would like to give a shout-out to Brittany Dyer, associate director of the Pro Edge Center, for her commitment to helping me succeed in all facets of undergrad while preparing me for grad school; Rebecca Merriman for welcoming me to work so closely with Summer Success Camp; Dr. Michael Poulakis for being a mentor I can consistently rely on; Dr. Rachel Feldwisch for giving me the opportunity to assist in research; and Robin Pierle for being the best UIndy staff member and mother a girl could ask for! I am so lucky to have you all in my corner. Thank you all for your support and guidance!

What is one of your favorite memories from your time at UIndy?

My favorite memories at UIndy are from my time as a counselor with Summer Success Camp! I had so many memories with so many great people.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

If possible, take courses that get you in settings other than the classroom! My most valuable educational experiences at UIndy were my internships, research practicum, and service-learning courses. These opportunities significantly promoted professional development and gave me a tighter network within the UIndy and Indianapolis community.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will be pursuing an Ed.S. in School Psychology in the fall of 2026.
