Leading up to May Commencement, we’re asking some of our graduates to tell us about their experience as Greyhounds and where their journey will lead them next. Meet May 2023 graduate Alyssa Albitz who will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a minor in Psychology, and an Honors Concentration at the end of this semester!
Why did you choose to study Nursing?
I have always been fascinated by science and the human body, and I am passionate about serving people. I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) my senior year of high school, and I enjoyed being able to care for others and work as a part of the healthcare team. From then, I knew that nursing was a great fit for me.
Why did you choose to study at UIndy?
I liked the smaller size of UIndy, which allows for deeper connection. When I visited UIndy on a preview day, I was able to meet faculty and students, who were so welcoming. I also knew that UIndy had a great nursing program, and I was amazed by the simulation lab when I visited.
Are you a part of any extracurriculars (either on or off campus)? If so, what are they and what is your role?
I have been involved with the Music Department throughout my time at UIndy and have played in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE), orchestra, and pep band. My senior year, I served as the principal horn.
I am an Honors peer mentor through the Ron and Laura Strain Honors College.
I am also a peer tutor for the School of Nursing’s Guided Study program.
Are there any faculty or staff members who have significantly impacted your time at UIndy? If so, who are they and how did they influence you?
Dr. Jennifer Carmack was my academic advisor and helped me coordinate my crazy schedule with nursing, honors, and music- not an easy task! She later became my Honors advisor, helping me to develop and execute my research project. She helped me to make my many different ideas into reality. She will do whatever she can to help and is always so encouraging!
What is one of your favorite memories from your time at UIndy?
Through a Spring Term in 2022, I went to Spain to hike 165 miles of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Experiencing different cultures, varying Spanish dialects, and the rich history was so eye-opening. I made some wonderful friends along the way. We shared many laughs and tears as we took in the beautiful mountain scenery, cared for our aching feet, and navigated new towns each day. I am incredibly thankful to the Honors College for covering the cost of the trip and my gear. I will never forget this incredible experience.
What are your plans after graduation?
I accepted a position as a nurse in the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) at St. Francis Medical Center.
How did your degree program prepare you for your next steps?
UIndy’s nursing program allowed me to gain hands-on clinical experience within different specialties at many facilities throughout Indianapolis. I also am very fortunate to have gained specialized experience in the operating room (OR) through a summer perioperative nursing elective taught by Dr. Toni Morris.
What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?
Freshman year is a great time to discover more about how you learn best, so try different learning methods out! Don’t be afraid to get involved on campus and go to events!
