Transfer Student Samuel Torres ‘27 (Marketing) Explores New Career Paths with MERCIndy Internship

75

The summer of 2024 marked a turning point for Samuel Torres ‘27 (Marketing). Not only was he exploring new career paths through an internship with the Multilingual Education Reform Collective of Indianapolis (MERCIndy), but he was also exploring new educational opportunities by transferring to the University of Indianapolis.

After spending his freshman year at Anderson University, Torres realized that he wanted more out of his college experience. He wanted to be closer to Indianapolis, one of the country’s fastest-growing metro areas, but still benefit from a small campus. UIndy checked all those boxes and more.

“I like the small classes that we have here at UIndy,” explained Torres. “Also, the School of Business offers a lot of really good connections through its professors and all of the different clubs that you can get involved with. So the networking aspect really drew me in.”

Within his first semester, Torres immersed himself in the UIndy community, joining the Marketing Club and earning a leadership role as treasurer. These experiences not only strengthened his connections with peers but also gave him insight into the professional possibilities available to him as a marketing major.

“All of the School of Business events throughout the year have helped me get to know some of the upperclassmen here and the paths they’ve taken,” said Torres. “They’re role models.”

Torres’s time at UIndy has already opened doors outside the classroom as well. Through his internship with MERCIndy, a nonprofit that supports schools in creating equitable and effective multilingual learning programs, he has honed his skills and explored his interests. As a marketing intern, he managed the organization’s social media accounts and led the revamp of their website. These responsibilities confirmed his passion for marketing while sparking an interest in finance.

“In the spring I’ll be more focused on finance,” said Torres. “Learning more with QuickBooks and stuff like that. That’ll be interesting because I haven’t gotten to work with any finance things yet.”

As his internship with MERCIndy continues into the spring, Torres looks forward to expanding his knowledge and gaining even more practical experience. His journey as a UIndy student and intern showcases his drive to grow both personally and professionally.
