Get to know UIndy faculty member Tracy Johnson, Assistant Professor of K-6 Literacy in the School of Education within the College of Education & Behavioral Sciences.
Which courses do you typically teach?
I teach primary literacy and reading intervention courses.
What inspired you to pursue a teaching career in literacy?
I was an elementary teacher for 19 years. I got to a point in which I wanted to make sure I knew everything there was to know about teaching literacy, and then I wanted to work with teachers to share that knowledge and empower them to make a difference for kids.
What is the best part of being a faculty member at UIndy?
I love the people I work with and really appreciate the chance to work with preservice teachers every day. The energy and passion I see being brought into education keeps me inspired!
What research or projects are you currently working on?
I study how children go about figuring out unknown words when they read and how teacher prompting, or scaffolding, impacts the use of those strategies.
What sets your program apart, and how does it prepare students for success in their careers?
Our faculty are serious about supporting our students in whatever they need for success. We are small enough that faculty can really get to know the students, and that makes a big difference in learning. We get students out into classrooms, practicing their teaching skills early and often, which is a critical component to their success.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience you had with a student or alum?
I have my students start class with a quote about why they want to be teachers. Once, a student wrote something that I had said in a previous class session as her quote!
What is one accomplishment that you are particularly proud of from your time at UIndy?
I have designed impactful reading intervention experiences that not only help our preservice teachers develop their skills, but also have positive impacts on children who are learning to read.
What advice do you have for students pursuing a career in education?
Take it seriously and be willing to work hard. Your students will appreciate your efforts to become the best teacher you can be (and you’ll probably get lots of hugs!).
What is one thing you wish your students knew about you?
I care deeply about their success and about their well-being.
What’s a hobby or interest you have that might surprise your students?
I like to read, hike, and swim. I’m also a decent singer and love to karaoke!
What is a quote or mantra that inspires you?
“For there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
—Amanda Gorman
If you weren’t in academia, what career would you choose and why?
I would be an elementary teacher or reading tutor. It’s my passion!
What’s the most interesting place you’ve traveled to, and what did you learn from the experience?
I spent my first two years of teaching on a reservation in South Dakota. I learned about the Lakota people, culture, and history. I learned that there are many ways of seeing and being in the world, and they all have value.
What is one must-visit spot, restaurant, or event in the Indianapolis area that you recommend to students?
Baan Thai Bistro in Wanamaker or the HIFI concert venue.
