Q&A With Tessa Haldeman ’22 (Biology)

460

Leading up to Winter Commencement, we’re asking some of our graduates to tell us about their experience as Greyhounds and where their journey will lead them next. Meet December 2022 graduate Tessa Haldeman who will receive a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Pre-Medicine later this month!

Why did you pursue a degree in biology?

I fell in love with biology in high school and decided to go for it in college.

Why did you choose to study at UIndy?

I chose to study at UIndy because it was a smaller school where I could connect with my teachers without having to worry classes being too big.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time at UIndy?

UIndy hosted a LEGO building competition in which groups competed to finish building a LEGO shoe first. My group took second to last place, but it was still so much fun.

Are there any faculty or staff members who have significantly impacted your time at UIndy?

Dr. Joe Burnell, associate professor of chemistry, was an amazing influence on me. Not only did his class challenge me, but he also helped me work through medical school applications and has always been there for me whenever I needed to know something.

What are your plans after graduation?

My goal is to get into medical school.

How did your degree program prepare you for your next steps?

All the classes I took allowed me to prepare myself for the MCAT and the other elective classes offered have allowed me to get a general idea of some of the topics I will be learning more about in medical school.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?

Your studies are important but don’t get too caught up in your work that you forget to live.
