Q&A with Dr. Grant Williams, Assistant Professor of Theatre

36

Get to know UIndy faculty member Dr. Grant Williams, assistant professor of theatre in the Shaheen College of Arts & Sciences!

Which courses do you typically teach?

I teach courses on acting, directing, play analysis, theatre history, and playwriting.

What inspired you to pursue a teaching career in theatre?

I was inspired to join the teaching field by my love of theatre and the performing arts.

What is the best part of being a faculty member at UIndy?

I enjoy the close-knit nature of the University. I work so closely with other faculty members and really get to know the students while working directly with them.

What research or projects are you currently working on?

I’m directing a play and a musical this year and, hopefully soon, adapting a play for next year.

What sets your program apart, and how does it prepare students for success in their careers?

The work students get to do in theatre at UIndy is as experiential as it gets. They have the opportunity to run a theatre company and gain a deep understanding of each role. Those who are seeking work in the industry will leave the program with full resumes and valuable experience.

Can you share a memorable moment or experience you had with a student or alum?

During the course of a semester, the program stages multiple plays. Each production is an opportunity to bring the play to life for new audiences. It is incredible to see all the work come together each time.

What is one accomplishment that you are particularly proud of from your time at UIndy?

In the midst of the pandemic, I directed a play with actors on stage at the UIndy Studio Theatre. Despite the limitations, the ingenuity and talent that came together during the production were so exciting. This play ended up receiving national recognition through the American College Theatre Festival

What advice do you have for students pursuing a career in education?

Get involved, learn as much as you can, and have fun!

What’s a hobby or interest you have that might surprise your students?

I am a music fanatic, but they might know that from the music I subject them to!

If you weren’t in academia, what career would you choose and why?

It would still be in theatre, but if not, teaching is my other love.
