Gaining Experience, Making Memories: Claire Nelson’s ’25 (Psychology) UIndy Experience

25

Congratulations to the University of Indianapolis Class of 2025! We asked 2025 graduates about their UIndy experience. Meet Claire Nelson, who is getting her master’s in psychology with plans to pursue her doctorate and become a clinical psychologist!

Why did you pursue psychology?

I am pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist specializing in brain injury and cognitive rehabilitation. This master’s program represents the first step in that journey.

Why did you choose to study at UIndy?

I chose the University of Indianapolis for its highly regarded clinical psychology (PsyD) program, which I’m applying for after graduation.

Are you a part of any extracurriculars on or off campus?

I volunteered at the Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) . This is a non-profit based in Indianapolis that provides educational and vocational support to the Burmese community. My role at BACI involves facilitating Haitian refugees through a joint program with the Haitian Association of Indiana. I also volunteered at the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center, where I assisted with their weekly food pantry.

During your time at UIndy, did you have the opportunity to complete an internship?

Since August, I have interned in the Brain Injury Coping Skills (BICS) group at Easterseals Crossroads in Indianapolis. I gained hands-on exposure to the challenges faced by individuals recovering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI). These experiences, rooted in my commitment to service members’ mental health, drive my dedication to TBI-focused clinical practice and research.

I also interned with Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center in the summer of 2025. With their social work internship program, I rotated through three TBI-focused facilities: Community Rehabilitation Hospital West, Easterseals Crossroads, and Ascension St. Vincent Hospital’s Med-Psych and Neurology units.

Which faculty or staff members have had a significant impact on your time at UIndy?

I gained substantial research experience working with Dr. Hui Zhang, Dr. Michael Poulakis, and Dr. Meredith Halcomb. I completed research projects with each and acquired distinct research expertise from them. Dr. Poulakis, also my academic advisor, provided invaluable guidance on my academic training and planning.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time at UIndy?

Hanging out with my classmates and attending football game tailgate parties are my favorite memories.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

Revisit what obsessed you in late childhood, even after compromising with life obligations or stronger incentives. Then find a way to let it survive and engineer it into your life in middle adulthood. Genuine vocations resist erosion.

How did the psychology program prepare you for your next steps?

UIndy’s master’s program has prepared me well for the academic and research demands of the doctoral program.

What are your plans after graduation?

I’m applying for doctor of psychology (PsyD) programs and plan to continue my training at UIndy.
