Transfer Student Spotlight: How Mayra Cisneros ’26 (Elementary Education, STEM) Found Her Community at UIndy

147

For National Transfer Student Week, we asked current transfer students about the transfer process and their UIndy experience.

Mayra Cisneros ’26 is majoring in elementary education with a concentration in STEM. Cisneros is a first-generation college student and transferred to UIndy from Ivy Tech Community College.

What inspired you to study in elementary education?

I was inspired to study elementary education because I want to help bridge the language barrier that many students and families face today. Growing up, I saw how difficult it can be for families to communicate and stay involved when English isn’t their first language. I aspire to be the kind of teacher who creates an inclusive classroom where every student and family feels valued, supported, and able to thrive academically.

Why did you choose to transfer to UIndy?

I chose UIndy because it aligned with things I was looking for, like the hands-on education. This allowed me to have experience in the field, which has helped with my confidence in the classroom.

I was also looking for a university that was supportive and had a sense of community. UIndy has small class sizes, which allows you to get personal attention and help. You also quickly meet friends in your classes, which makes it easier to transition into.

How would you describe the UIndy transfer process?

I would describe the UIndy transfer process as seamless. Ben Houston was an amazing support all the way from the beginning to now. UIndy truly aspires to make it as easy and seamless for students to transfer and continue their education.

How has your experience on campus been so far? What do you enjoy most about UIndy?

My experience on campus has been extremely positive. I constantly feel supported and welcomed by both faculty and classmates. What I enjoy the most about UIndy is the sense of community, the support, and the hands-on learning through experiences in the classroom.

Is there a professor, advisor, or staff member who has made an impact on your UIndy experience?

Dr. John Somers’ excitement and passion for STEM showed me how important it is to integrate STEM and Engineering into your classroom. Because of his passion in STEM, it made me realize that I also have a passion for STEM integration and the impact it has on student learning experiences.

How have they helped you feel connected?

I have joined a few clubs and organizations. Last school year, I served as Director of Programming for SOL. This year, I am the Vice President of Kappa Delta Pi, the honor society for education majors. I am also an active member of Aspiring Educators. They have helped me feel connected by providing opportunities to get involved and connect with students who share the same interests and aspirations.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?

I enjoy spending my time in the nook that is located in the School of Education. It’s a small, quiet space for education majors. I also enjoy building lesson plans in the Makerspace because everything I need to create fun and engaging lessons tends to be there!

Can you share a memorable moment or experience you’ve had since transferring?

I had the opportunity to serve as a mentor for the University of Indianapolis Teacher Prep Academy! It was inspiring to connect with these students and support them as they explored the field of education through hands-on experiences and meaningful discussions about the impact of teaching.

What advice would you give to other students who may be considering transferring to UIndy?

The advice I would give to other students who may be considering transferring to UIndy is just apply. With UIndy’s free application and all the support they offer, the process is smooth and stress free. You will quickly realize that UIndy provides not only high-quality education within their many programs, but they also have a strong sense of community.
